Annual Drive Now Under Way -Mrs. D. M. Gunn Again Heads Local Chapter.
Subscriptions to the annual Red Cross membership are being taken this week at points set up in Grand Rapids as well as elsewhere all over the nation. The annual membership remains at $1.00 of which one-half is to be used for local work and half for national and international work.
Mrs. D. M. Gunn is chairman of the Grand Rapids chapter of the Red Cross as she has been for some years. She is being assisted in the annual roll call from November 11 to November 27 inclusive, by Mrs. Mata Bennett and by other volunteer workers who will give part time service to the worthy cause. Booths have been established at the Pokegama hotel, at the postoffice and at the local theater where memberships can be obtained. A house to house canvass is not planned at this time.
Attention is called to the work which is being done by the Red Cross in peace time as well as war time. The national Red Cross expended a large amount of money early this year in disaster relief operations where floods, fires and other disasters had made necessary their services. A great deal of work is done in health activities through rural sections and elsewhere. War services amounting to more than one million dollars were carried on during the present year. This is to aid disabled veterans and also to serve men now not listed in the regular army and navy.
Some times it has been stated that the Red Cross dollar did not return to the local territory. Officials point out that this should be a cause for gratification in that no serious catastrophe has overtaken this section of the country and demanded the services of the Red Cross. They show that this is no reason for failing to contribute because nature is capricious and the next terrible disaster in the form of fire or storm might as readily touch this section as any other.
