What is this article about?
An old friend and former resident, now in Humboldt, writes to explain Charles Westmoreland's lower vote in last fall's election against Hartson, attributing it to party trades and Copperhead opposition, while praising Westmoreland's temperate character, property ownership, law practice, and unwavering Unionist stance to support his nomination.

Our correspondent further says:—
"Mr. Westmoreland is a temperate, staid and well-ordered citizen, and is so held and respected. He is no adventurer; owns property, and has as large a law practice as any attorney in the district. He is the candidate of no faction—runs in the interest of no corporation, and if nominated it will be by the people and because they have confidence in him as a Unionist who never flinched anywhere. To those who know him it is not necessary to say this, but it is desirable that the people of the district should know it, to the end that justice may be done."
