Hon. Charles Westmoreland.—An old friend and former citizen of this county, now a resident of Humboldt, having read the recently published articles relative to the comparative vote of Hartson and Westmoreland, last Fall, writes us as follows:—"The explanation is true to some extent, but don't cover the case. Westmoreland was nominated by a vote of 29 to 2 in convention, but the people in choosing their delegates intended that it should be unanimous. The Copperheads had two candidates in the field against him, which would have insured his election, had his own party not been strong enough to elect. For this reason "weak" men on the ticket traded Westmoreland, and the State ticket (including Hartson) received some of his surplus strength."

Our correspondent further says:—

"Mr. Westmoreland is a temperate, staid and well-ordered citizen, and is so held and respected. He is no adventurer; owns property, and has as large a law practice as any attorney in the district. He is the candidate of no faction—runs in the interest of no corporation, and if nominated it will be by the people and because they have confidence in him as a Unionist who never flinched anywhere. To those who know him it is not necessary to say this, but it is desirable that the people of the district should know it, to the end that justice may be done."
