BETTER BUSINESS IN
VIRGINIA INDICATED

"Signs of the Times" point to prosperous business conditions in the Old Dominion, according to reports made by several state agencies.

Virginia farmers will receive approximately $110,000,000 for their 1937 crops, according to estimates made by the State Department of Agriculture.

The department's monthly report said "Virginia agriculture in 1937 was favored with fine growing season. The production of all crops save possibly tobacco will run above the average farm income, which has been steadily climbing since the low of 1932, and is expected to exceed that of 1936 by about 5 per cent."

The income of 1937 has exceeded that of past years "despite a decline in prices of Potatoes, Peanuts and cotton," the report stated.

The department reported there had been a "noticeable" improvement in farm property during the year.

The value of Virginia's manufacture products aggregated $902,346,968 in 1936, an increase of 15 per cent over the 1935 figure and 16 per cent over the $779,691,363.00 figure for the "boom" year of 1929,

John Hopkins Hall, Jr., head of the State Department of Labor and Industry, revealed in his annual report to Governor Peery.

In terms of the high prices of 1929, he added, the 1936 value represented a 36 per cent gain over the 1929 value.

There were more wage-earners in Virginia manufacturing plants in 1936 than in 1929, the report disclosed.

The average number of workers in manufacturing in 1936 was 160,793, an increase of 6.6 per cent over the 1935 average and 12.9 over the 1929 level.

Total wages paid advanced 14 per cent over the 1935 total and 10 per cent over the 1929 total in terms of 1929 prices.
