ALBANY. June 1.

We hear that David Ramsay, an Indian Trader, who has resided some Time past to the Westward of Niagara; happened some Time last Spring to be assaulted by, or had a difference with some of the Natives, a Scuffle ensued in which three of them were killed; these he buried under the Snow, & imagining it was not safe for him to remain longer there, he put his Effects into a Canoe, and retreated with his Brother and an Indian Child their Attendant. to a Place nearer to the Fort at Niagara; he had not been long there before a Party of Indians came to trade with him, to whom (as he understands the Indian Language) he overheard his Attendant relate his Adventure with their Brethren; as it was not possible for him to escape, he ordered his Brother to give them as much Rum as they would get intoxicated and give him the opportunity to get off; however they seized, bound and poured a Pint of Rum down his Throat, then sat down to deliberate in what Manner they should put him to death; his Brother supplied them plentifully with Rum, and taking the Advantage of its Operation upon their Intellects. secretly conveyed a Knife to him, with it he soon disentangled himself and dispatched four of his Antagonists, together with the Urchin who betrayed him the rest escaped; he then came and delivered himself up to the Garrison at Niagara from whence a party of Soldiers went and brought in his Goods.

A Gentleman, who lately came from Cherry-Valley, informs us, that coming down Mohawk River, he fell in with a Company of Indians, who were on the way to complain to the Hon. Sir WILLIAM JOHNSON. of the above related affair.

It is hoped that Sir William's extensive Influence, among the Indian Nations, will produce an Accommodation, and prevent their making Reprisals upon the defenceless Traders and Settlers upon the Frontiers; and in fine, the unspeakable Calamities of an Indian War.
