We understand that a meeting was held at Sterling on Wednesday the 13th inst. of the Society for Mutual Improvement, at which an interesting lecture was delivered on the subject of intemperance.
Immediately after, at a meeting of about three hundred citizens of that town, the following resolutions were voted unanimously.
Resolved, that we view with approbation the exertions made at the present day for the promotion of temperance and consider it our duty to unite our efforts in this good cause.
Resolved, therefore, that while we would not dictate the course to be pursued by others, we will set an uniform example ourselves, and that we will no longer consider ardent spirits as a mark of hospitality necessary to be offered in social parties at funerals or at publick meetings for civil or military purposes.
