EDINBURGH, May 27.

On Saturday last a Man of this Place who had long had a fair Character, being a little deficient in his House-Rent, & at the Time absent from his House, and in the Country about his lawful Business, his Landlord took the Advantage, notwithstanding of sufficient Security offered, to sequestrate, and roup his Furniture at scarce the Third of its Value. The Tenant, upon his returning home, was surprised to find his House quite empty, and, upon his being informed of the Cause, the poor Man was driven to that Despair, as on Monday Morning he made a dismal Exit.

In Revenge of the merciless Landlord's Conduct a great Mob assembled on Monday Night, carried every Thing out of the Landlord's House to the Street, and burnt it, not Sparing Some Money, a few Bank-Notes in one of his Drawers, yea not even the Bird in the Cage, Which were all committed to the Flames. One Fellow was observed to get off with a Firkin of Butter, but was overtaken; brought back, and he with the Firkin thrown into the Fire, from which he narrowly escaped with his Life. Nothing in short was pre-served, except some Numbers of the Universal Bible, which, after a Consultation held amongst the Rioters, were divided amongst them, but every Thing else was consumed, the Mob, with one Voice crying out, "they would have nothing to do with any of the accursed Things pertaining to such an oppressive merciless Wretch." who, had he not got out of the Way on the first Notice of the intended Riot, would undoubtedly have shared the Same Fate with his Furniture.
