The 8th of April last, a numerous party of the Bourgeois, seconded by a great number of the natives and inhabitants, took arms, and attacked the guard of the Republic, took the arsenals and magazines, over awed the council, and insulted the magistrates. In consequence of which the King of France, as Protector of the Republic, took measures in concert with the King of Sardinia and the Canton of Berne, to put an end to those disorders, and to quiet the Republic. For this purpose, about 12,000 men, belonging to the three powers, were assembled near Geneva: and on the 27th of last month the town was summoned by the three Generals, and five hours only were given them to reply; after a short consideration the troops of the three powers were admitted, and thus terminated, without striking a blow, a business from which the most fatal consequences were feared.
