Full Text

New Orleans, December 18. - The testimony before the House committee to-day was perfectly crushing to the republicans. A number of the colored democrats testified, one of them the president of a democratic club in Concordia. The preponderance of colored republicans there is so great that the democratic negroes are kept in a state of almost continual terror by threats of violence. It is common talk that they must be driven from their homes or waylaid at midnight and killed in public meetings. Their wives are told they must leave them. Mr. Floyd King, a gentleman in charge of several plantations, gave a long and minute description of the republican reign of terror in the riparian parishes of upper Louisiana. Gov. Ex-Gov. Wickliffe testified that in West Feliciana more than a thousand colored men had joined the democratic clubs and were more enthusiastic than the whites.
