PETITIONS ARE CIRCULATED

Petitions were put in circulation Monday, seeking several thousand signatures to present to the Board of Supervisors asking that body to give "full consideration" to proposals for lowering the county budget.

The petitions will be delivered to the supervisors before the budget is finally adopted August 11.

Each petition reads as follows:

WHEREAS, the tentative budget adopted for the operation of Maricopa county for the fiscal year 1941-42 shows unnecessary and unprecedented increases in the cost of operations and proposes to further burden the already overloaded taxpayer;

NOW, THEREFORE, you are requested by the undersigned citizens and taxpayers of Maricopa county to lend your efforts to aid in bringing relief to us by the elimination of unnecessary expenses in county operations by the transfer of at least $120,000.00 from the gasoline tax receipts to the road bond redemption fund where it properly belongs as provided by law, and by the elimination of any provision to purchase any new machinery which is so vitally needed for national defense and which from all indications will be difficult to obtain at this time and available, the price which will be exorbitant; and

IT IS FURTHER REQUESTED that all funds available from other sources be equitably distributed and that in no event shall any budget be adopted that will create a greater tax rate for Maricopa county than was in effect the past year, for the same operations to the end that the taxpayers of Maricopa county may get the full benefit of the reduction in the county rate brought about by the new state school fund apportionment act.

We, the undersigned, demand that full consideration be given to these suggestions which are being made in the public interest and without any selfish motives.
