The expectations of the quidnuncs were highly excited yesterday,—and their devotions perhaps spoiled,—by a report that the De Rham packet ship of the 1st inst., from Havre, was below. It turned out to be a mistake; but if the winds prevailing, and that for so long have prevailed here, have blown on the Atlantic, we may every hour calculate upon short arrivals from Europe; and such are anxiously looked for. The state of political affairs in the old world does indeed justify the almost feverish anxiety existing here for late intelligence. Belgium is now the point of attraction. Its affairs can be peaceably settled, and without foreign intervention there will be more reason for believing that the general peace of Europe will continue undisturbed. The report by the last arrival, that Antwerp had passed into the hands of the Belgians, though undoubtedly communicated by telegraph from Lille to Paris, is almost incredible; though such an event, if it occurred, must be decisive, we think, of the separation of Holland and Flanders. Whether, and how the latter can maintain a separate independence, seems to us, owing to its geographical position, a very doubtful point. But the question is too near its development to make it either useful or wise to run into anticipation. A few days must bring us decisive accounts.
