CIO Goes to Court To Get Vet His Job

The CIO has gone to court to help Joseph Grasso, 26-year-old medically-discharged veteran, get his job back.

Grasso's bosses, A. J. Crowhurst & Sons, leather tanning firm in Belleville, N. J., say they can't use Grasso any more because he has flat feet.

Grasso says he had flat feet throughout the several years he worked there before going into the Army, and that his flat feet didn't prevent him from completing 20-mile marches in the Army, with 70 to 100-pound packs on his back.

Irving Abramson, chairman of the CIO Allied War Relief Committee, president of the New Jersey State CIO Council, and an attorney as well as a labor leader, has filed a "friend of the court" brief on Grasso's behalf and with his permission in the New Jersey Federal Court of Judge Guy L. Fako.

The brief is filed in the name of both the CIO relief organization and the New Jersey CIO Council.

Grasso is not a CIO member and Crowhurst & Sons is not a union plant. However, the CIO considered the case of extreme importance in establishing through court action the legality of provisions in CIO contracts, guaranteeing the seniority rights of veterans on their pre-induction jobs.
