Social Democrats Take Hold of Reins of Milwaukee's City Government
HOME RULE FAVORITE MEASURE
New Executive Has Back of Him Twenty-one Aldermen—Economy and Promotion of Well Being of Workingmen Urged.
Milwaukee, Apr. 19.—The government of the city of Milwaukee today passed into the hands of the social democrats, with Mayor Seidel as leader. The inaugural message of the new mayor said:
"Before all things, home rule and the right of self-government included the promotion of the well being for the working classes of the city; enforcement of sanitary measures; establishment of a bureau of municipal research with a view to placing the finances of the city on a sound and sane basis; and combining of various offices to save expense."
Seidel will have back of him twenty-one aldermen, all members of his party. The minority consists of ten democrats and four republicans. The council chamber was densely packed when the new city officials took their places.
