Over the Falls

By Western Associated Press.

BUFFALO, August 18.—Capt. Rhodes and Herman Burkhart of this city, gave an exhibition in swimming in Niagara river today. Only a few spectators were present. A tug followed the swimmers down the stream. After swimming about five miles they were taken from the water pretty thoroughly chilled. Rhodes being greatly exhausted and sick. Rhodes now states he will send a dummy over the falls Monday, and threatens to make the attempt himself Tuesday.

Buffalo, August 18.—Capt. Rhodes in an interview stated he would surely swim the rapids of Niagara Falls, but would not give the date. He stated that no one except his wife and brother should know the date when the attempt would be made. He stated his main object was to obtain the government's prize of $50,000, and if he was successful in the attempt he would build a monument to Capt. Webb to cost $5,000, and that the widow of Capt. Webb should have an equal amount.
