FOR BABY DEATH

Driver of Truck Which Killed Child, Bound Over After Hearing.

FIX BAIL AT $3,000

Walter Larsen, driver of the truck which on July 24, ran down and killed two year old Gerald Quardokus, was bound over to circuit court for trial in bonds of $3,000, on a charge of manslaughter following a preliminary hearing in municipal court today.

Two witnesses who did not testify at the inquest were put on the stand. They were Mrs. Arthur Andrews, 853 Harry avenue and Roy Miles of Bain station who took the mother and injured child to the hospital.

Mrs. Andrews said that she watched the baby run into the street. Her attention was then attracted by the sound of the approaching truck, and she watched while the baby was hit and then saw it fall in back of the machine. She said that she estimated the speed of the machine at between 20 and 25 miles an hour.

Child Ran Rapidly.

Under cross examination she testified that the baby moved as rapidly as it is possible for a child of that age to travel. She also said that she did not hear the mother scream until after the child had been struck.

Roy Miles said that he happened to be passing just after the accident and that he offered to take the mother and baby to the hospital. He said that several times on the way to the hospital the mother thought the baby was dying.

Emil Meissner, secretary of police, told of his conversation with Larsen when he arrived at the scene. He said that Larsen had been drinking, and that while he could not say that he was drunk, yet there was a certain unsteadiness about his actions.

Meissner also told of having made measurements at that time.
