DISOWNED BY HER KIN.
A Jewess Who Marries a Gentile
Cut Off from Her People.
Scranton, Pa., Feb. 24.-The sensation of
the hour in this city is the romantic runaway
marriage of John Farr, a sturdy and well-
educated Welshman, and an extraordinarily
beautiful little 16-year-old Jewess named
Justine Levy. The family of the bride are
fearfully angered at her union to a gentile,
and in a daily paper, under the head of death
notices, is the following announcement, sur-
rounded by a heavy black border:
We mourn the marriage of our sister Jus-
tine Levy to John Farr as death, and disown
her for life.
Levy Family.
Farr, the hero of the escapade, is 26 years
of age, of excellent character, sober, studious,
and industrious. He learned the printing
trade in the office of The Republican, and
saved money enough to secure a good schooling
at Lafayette, where he became quite
popular. He is at present employed as assist.
and only a short time ago was elected a mem-
ber of that body. His courtship of Miss
Levy was bitterly opposed by the girl's
friends. The young couple finally had to
make love through the telephone, and Miss
Levy's relatives notified the exchange that
unless this system of spooning was stopped
they would be compelled to cut off their tele-
phone. Farr and his sweetheart succeeded
in meeting several times, and were surprised
one night in an ice-cream saloon. They
escaped through the back yard, scaled
a high fence, and ran off to the resi-
dence of the Rev. George E. Guild, on the
outskirts of the city. They were married at
2 o'clock in the morning, and the accommo-
dating clergyman gave them shelter for the
night. The young couple are now living in
Farr's home. The Farr and Levy families
have had several stormy meetings, and a
number of arrests are threatened. Farr
says, however, that no power on earth can
separate himself and his wife.
