Full Text
The Cham of the Tartars, during his Stay in this City, strongly insisted on the Necessity of making Peace with the Christian Powers, especially with Russia; and that in order to engage the latter to consent to it, Azoph must be abandoned to her, provided she will agree to demolish the Outworks of that Town: To give greater weight to his Reasons, he represented to the Divan, that the Crimea could not possibly sustain another Invasion by the Russians; and added, that if the Porte intended to continue the War, and preserve that Peninsula, she must take upon herself the Care of defending it. These Representations had such an Effect, that a Resolution was taken to send our whole Naval Force to the Black Sea, and transport to the Crimea a sufficient Number of Troops, Provisions, and warlike Stores, to prevent its falling into the Hands of the Russians. A Report was spread here, a few Days ago, that Count Bonneval had drowned himself; but this wants Confirmation.
