What is the cause assigned for the prosperity of ancient Greece? To learn his military exercises, was a part of education imposed by the states upon every free citizen.
To what is attributed the unprecedented grandeur of Rome? To the same cause. In Rome the exercises of the Campus Martius answered the same purposes with those of the Gymnasium in Greece; while under the feudal system, every freeman was obliged to attend to his military discipline, victory and glory attended the arms of our Celtic ancestors; but no sooner did the love of arbitrary power in the tyrants of those days, impel them to persuade freemen to neglect the use of arms, and devolve it on mercenary troops, than from glory and conquest, they sunk into inglorious ease, and from dominion and elevation of mind, diminished into slaves, that seemed born for the sole purpose of meanly cringing and bending a dastard body at the nod of their haughty tyrants.
May our glorious Militia ever hold fast their arms!
