Most Perilous Phase of Homeward Flight Is Safely Completed
PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD, BRITISH WEST INDIES, Dec. 13.—(UP).—Col. and Mrs. Chas. A. Lindbergh, hurrying home for Christmas, arrived here yesterday after a daring 900-mile dash over the Brazilian jungles from Manaos.
The fliers reached this island off the coast of Venezuela at 2:27 p. m., making the flight without incident in a little more than nine hours.
The Lindberghs, particularly Anne Morrow Lindbergh, want to get home by Christmas to join their infant son John, whom they left July 9 on what was to have been an aerial survey of five or six weeks over the North Atlantic air route to Europe.
The flight yesterday was one of the most dangerous in the 20,000 miles and more that they have flown in the past five months. It was over jungles for a good section of the flight after they had followed the Rio Negro from Manaos northwestward to the Rio Branco. They followed this for a while during the nine-hour flight, but then cut northward across British Guiana, flying over jungles, mountains and small streams where a landing was practically impossible, especially for a plane equipped with large pontoons, such as their low-winged seaplane.
Mrs. Lindbergh, at the wireless key, tapped out messages of their progress from time to time. She reported about noon that they were flying through occasional squalls, the Pan-American Airways announced, but having no difficulty.
