On the 14th instant a deputy-sheriff (a Dr. Smith) in Westchester county, state of New-York, having a writ against one Ryer, met him in a public house, and while he was taking him prisoner with the customary formality, Ryer instantly drew a pistol out of his pocket, and shot Smith dead—Notwithstanding a number of people were present, Ryer made his escape, by threatening to shoot (with another loaded pistol he had in his possession) any person that would dare to lay hands on him.—One hundred dollars are offered by the high sheriff for apprehending and securing the murderer.
