Methodist Conference.

For the second time the annual Vermont Methodist conference met at Morrisville last week, presided over by Bishop J. W. Hamilton, of San Francisco.

He received a dispatch from home Thursday morning stating that his home was somewhat wrecked by the earthquake but that the family was safe.

These officers were elected: Secretary, Rev. F. W. Lewis, of St. Johnsbury; assistant secretaries, Revs. R. J. Christie, of Craftsbury, and William Shaw, of Windsor; statistical secretary, Rev. Milton H. Smith, of Mechanicsville; assistants to statistical secretary, H. A. Woodbury and Fred Daniels, of Mechanicsville; biographical secretary, Rev. A. L. Cooper, of Randolph; treasurer, Rev. S. H. Smith, of Richford; assistants to treasurer, Revs. S. G. Lewis of Barton Landing, and N. M. Fowler, of Randolph; railroad secretary, Rev. William N. Roberts, of Moretown.

The Conference passed a resolution of sympathy with Rev. I. O. Sherburn of Bradford, who is seriously ill and a message from him was read.

Among those who took the annual examination were Jesse A. Martin of Walden, Charles W. Kelley of Lunenburg, and Olaf J. Anderson of St. Johnsbury Center.

Rev. Jacob Finger, of Bakersfield, has been appointed to the pastorate of the Methodist church at Baker City, Oregon, to which place he goes by special request of Bishop Moore, who presided over the last session of the Vermont conference. Mr. Finger's salary there will be more than twice what he has been receiving here.

Rev. W. C. Newell, for the past five years the pastor of the church at Newport, is suffering from an attack of nervous dyspepsia, which will necessitate a rest of a year.

Rev. C. S. Hulbert, of Essex, will not take an appointment another year, family reasons causing him to decline a flattering offer from his presiding elder. Mr. Hulbert has been pastor at Essex Center and Essex Junction for five years.

Among others dropping out are Fred M. Barnes, a graduate of Wesleyan University, who was obliged to relinquish his work at Waitsfield during the year on account of ill health; C. C. Whidden, of West Burke, who leaves the ministry for a time to accept a lucrative offer in business at Philadelphia; C. W. Gorse, of Danville, who leaves the work temporarily to care for his father, who is in infirm health and unable to carry on his business; F. M. Miller of Hartland, who has removed to the west on account of the health of his family; W. T. Miller, of Grand Isle, who was obliged to transfer to Colorado on account of the health of his daughter; Albert Gregory, of Albany, who has retired from the ministry and is now occupying a farm on one of his former charges; W. H. Atkinson, who was released from his charge early in the year and who is not yet certain as to his future work; George W. Manning, of East Burke, who resigned his charge early in the Conference year and who has been transferred to the New England and Southern Conference; Arthur C. Dennett, formerly of St. Albans Bay, left without appointment last spring to attend school, and who is now transferred to the New Jersey conference, where he takes work amid the associates of his early life; Chaplain C. M. Charlton of the United States Navy, who severs his connection with the Vermont Conference in order that he may have his membership in the New England Southern Conference, as that is contiguous to his station at the Naval Training School at Newport, R. I.; and W. B. Wright, a probationer in the conference, who has concluded to enter other fields.

On Tuesday evening occurred the anniversary of the Conference Temperance Society, of which Rev. J. A. Dixon of Hardwick is chairman. C. J. Ferguson, superintendent of the Vermont Anti-Saloon League was the speaker.

Wednesday evening the anniversary of the Missionary Society of the Conference was held with Rev. Dr. E. M. Taylor of Boston, field secretary of the general society as speaker.

Frank W. Lewis, presiding elder of St. Johnsbury district, read an interesting report, an abstract of which follows:

The St. Johnsbury district, F. W. Lewis, extends from Brookfield and South Newbury to Canada and embraces an area larger than some whole conferences. It contains 44 charges manned by 30 members and probationers. Preaching has been conducted at 69 places regularly and occasionally elsewhere.

F. G. Rainey and J. E. Knapp are among those translated to the conference above during the year, also Mrs. Luvia W. Hitchcock of Plainfield, Mrs. G. L. Wells of Hardwick and Rev. Abner Howard of St. Johnsbury Center.

Because of ill health the pastors at Albany and East Burke have been relieved. W. C. Newell of Newport lays down his work at this conference for a year's reluctant rest leaving a united and aggressive church to regret his illness.

Mrs. Hough, the wife of the pastor at Groton, is still very ill.

One third of the charges on the district have increased the salaries paid the pastors, the aggregate amounting to over $1,400, the net increase being over $1,100.

Better business methods would produce better results.

Inquiry has been made as to title of church property and great laxity has been found as to many deeds.

Much attention has been paid to the matter of insurance, many churches

and parsonages have been insured or better insured And a reestimate of the value of church edifices and parsonages has been made, carelessness having often heretofore been in evidence in this regard. The net increase in the valuation of church property will amount to over $10,000, a third of this representing moneys expended and two-thirds the reestimate.

Among repairs the following are noted: Baire, $135; Barton Landing, $160; Concord, $325; Craftsbury, $100; Derby, $1500; Evansville, $200; Guildhall, $125; Hardwick, $170; Holland and Morgan, $450; Irasburg, $115; Marshfield, $275; St. Johnsbury, $135, and lesser sums elsewhere. Preachers meetings have been held at Lyndon, Craftsbury, Derby and Cabot and were occasions of profit and uplift. The moribund camp meeting at Lyndonville has been given new life and a Bible school added.

In evangelistic work the "group system" was used with excellent results while Evangelist Ralph Gillam has led many great campaigns with glorious results in the way of conversions.

Among the places showing the largest results were: Lyndonville, 50 accessions; Concord and Victory, 58 accessions; Plainfield, 30 accessions; Barre, 64 accessions; St. Johnsbury, 29 accessions; Glover, 21 accessions, and lesser numbers elsewhere, and a gratifying net increase on the district as a whole is reported. The decline of the Epworth League has been arrested. Next year will show an increase

The question of the location of the next session of the annual conference was taken up, and an invitation to meet at St. Johnsbury was gracefully given by Rev. I. M. Frost in behalf of the church there. The invitation was accepted with thanks, and the next session of the conference will be held in the scale city.
