PHILADELPHIA, NOV. 4.

Saturday last the President of the United States arrived at Germantown from his seat in Virginia.

We hear with pleasure that Mr. Hamilton, the Secretary of the treasury, is at Germantown, in good health.

This forenoon the markets were crowded with provisions of every kind in great plenty—the citizens are returning fast to their habitations, which have been unfrequented for some weeks.

Reports of to-day, with regard to the general health of the city, are flattering and very satisfactory.

Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Philadelphia, to his friend in this city, dated November 1, 1793.

I send you glad tidings! Two days ago a white flag was displayed at Bush-Hill, in token of convalescence; and yesterday all the carts which were employed to carry the sick to the hospital, were discharged. The frosts we have had for several nights together, nearly healed the city, and the plentiful rain, which began about noon yesterday, and still continues, will by the blessing of God, perfect the cure, and poor Philadelphia shall yet be spared. It is probable a few days will bring us 20 or 30,000 of our citizens back to their habitations, and the gloomy clouds of melancholy depopulation shall vanish away. For three months we have had scarce any other business but making coffins, digging graves and burying the dead—The scene has been so truly distressing, that my heart melts, and my eyes overflow, when I review what we have passed through.
