Full Text

The dispatches received from a score of points in the Old World and the New give to every newspaper reader an excellent summary of what happened in the ranks of labor yesterday. The day had a noteworthy mission, and there had been more or less reason to fear that, under mistaken guidance, the assembled forces, especially in some of Europe's larger cities, might be incited to disorder. The day was remarkable for the quiet which, almost without exception, prevailed in every city where organized labor gave manifestation of its sympathy with the movement for an eight-hour rule. In the city of Paris a good many arrests had been made in anticipation of disturbance. In Berlin as well as in the chief cities of Europe, order prevailed. In the United States a number of strikes reached the culminating point yesterday and the spread of this movement is best shown by a glance at this morning's dispatches. At this hour it is not possible to say what the night may have brought forth in the cities where monster parades were to be held. In New York city and at some points in the West these parades were announced to be conducted by socialists, with whose demonstrations it is not probable that the regular organizations of American labor would co-operate under any circumstances. The day is memorable in that it proclaims labor's support of a movement in favor of a change which the coolest observers believe is sure to come.
