London, Jan. 13.--The rise in prices is costing the inhabitants of Greater London something like $500,000,000 a year. This is the conclusion arrived at by a statistician, based on a calculation of the pre-war consumption of food, fuel, clothing, tobacco, drink, etc.
In the principal foodstuffs alone he makes out a total increased expenditure of $250,000,000. The seven millions of people in Greater London consume about 9,500 tons of food daily.
This includes 6,200,000 pounds of bread a day, and, figuring the average rise at three pence a loaf, the increased expenditure on this item alone amounts to $95,000 a day, or about $35,000,000 a year.
