CLERKENWELL SESSIONS—FEBRUARY 22.
The Court was occupied till a very late hour upon the trial of the ci-devant Marquis de Chambonat, for obtaining goods by false pretences of Monf. Bertrand de Moleville, formerly Minister of Marine in France. It was stated by the prosecutor, that soon after his arrival in this country, he was introduced to the Marquis, whom he understood to be at the head of a trading club in Pall Mall. The Marquis informed him he could dispose of a quantity of port wine to the club, and the prosecutor in consequence sent the defendant as much as came to £70l. The defendant afterwards said the profit amounted to £19l. and that they would share it between them. The defendant next represented that he was about to purchase a considerable quantity of linen, and wished the prosecutor to engage in the speculation; the latter agreed, and sent him £200l. but it turned out that the whole was a fabrication, and that the defendant had neither disposed of the wine nor linens in the way of trade, but had lost the whole of what the prosecutor had entrusted to him at a gaming-house. It was proved, that the Marquis had obtained various sums of the prosecutor, by false pretences, amounting together to upwards of £2000l.—The Jury found the defendant guilty, and he was sentenced to be imprisoned six months in Newgate.

The ci-devant Marquis de Chambonat was tried for obtaining goods by false pretences from Monf. Bertrand de Moleville, formerly Minister of Marine in France. The prosecutor was introduced to the Marquis, believed to head a trading club in Pall Mall, and was induced to send £70 worth of port wine for sale to the club, later sharing supposed £19 profit. Subsequently, the Marquis solicited £200 for a linen purchase speculation, but it was a fabrication; the funds were lost at a gaming-house. Total sums obtained by false pretences exceeded £2000.
