MONTGOMERY. Ala, -(ANP)-
Because they participated in demonstration at a women's dormitory last November, disciplinary action has been taken against 40 Alabama State College students.
Eight students were dismissed last week from the school: 10 others were transferred from dormitory residence to day students, and 22 were put on probation.
That action was disclosed in a report made by Dr. H. Council Trenholm. president of the college to the State Board of Education. None of the students was identified.
His report also said that "formal appraisal of student accumulated conduct records has been scheduled with the anticipation that some other students will not be re-admitted for the next year."
The disturbance referred to occurred last November when coeds staged demonstrations against what they termed overcrowded housing conditions on the campus.
During the disturbance, rooms were flooded and broken glass scattered over the floors of the dormitory but no one was reported injured.
In commenting on the disturbance, President Trenholm said:
"Through numerous individual student interviews a combination of the following circumstances caused the disturbance:
"1 Some protest reactions against the increased insistence upon observance of off-campus movies on school nights.
"2. Some sympathetic support of a dismissed student.
"3. Some misguided student leadership with an ill-conceived rationalization that a demonstration would get attention and accelerated action respecting some complaints and misunderstandings.
"4 Some accumulated resentment against some dormitory personnel officers.
"5 Some inadequacy of coordination of staff action along with an insufficient number of dormitory staff workers."
Dr. Trenholm said that in the future admission and continued attendance is to be on a quarter-to-quarter basis in terms of academic and conduct records.
These records will be reviewed by a special faculty committee on admissions, he added.
