TWO NOTABLE FISHERWOMEN.

Their Wonderful Skill and Success in the Piscatorial Art.

One of the finest salmon fishermaidens of the present day is Miss Gunnison, a London lady of distinction, who spends all her winters in New York, and her summers abroad. She recently purchased from one of the best known New York sporting houses, a splendid split bamboo double-handled salmon rod, with which she intends to whip the streams of Scotland and Wales this season. Miss Gunnison is one of the most remarkable fisherwomen of the present day, tall and athletic; not one woman in ten thousand, and few men indeed, could wade the brawling streams as she does, handle her big eighteen-foot rod, almost like a young hemlock sapling, with equal ease and grace, or throw a gorgeous salmon fly with equal lightness and accuracy, to say nothing of hooking and playing her game.

A worthy rival of Miss Gunnison's, at least in trout fishing, and almost a pioneer among ladies in this sport, is Mrs. J. W. Mendenhall, of the St. James Hotel, Washington. She has fished for over twenty years, and yet is as enthusiastic and successful as ever: in a fishing party of ladies and gentlemen, she always catches three trout to her companions' one. She prefers trout fishing with the fly, and is a genuine enthusiast, dressing in Bloomer costume and wading the streams. In Pike and Lycoming Co. and near Trout Run, Pa., the places she does most affect, the old fishermen say the trout all lie with their heads up stream, and their ears open, ready to dart up stream as soon as they hear that Mrs. Mendenhall is on the war path.

New York and Brooklyn boast many clever lady anglers; one of the most noted in a literary point of view is Miss Kate Hillard, the niece of W. J. Stillman.
