A BIT OF HISTORY

The Rev. J. B. Ackley of Larrabee street, former pastor of the Methodist church, has been looking up the history of the church for the historical address which he is to deliver at the church Sunday morning. Burnside was originally called Scotland and was a part of the town of Manchester. Among the early Methodist preachers of the eighteenth century was the Rev. George Roberts who was the originator of the first Methodist church in this town. In those days the preachers covered many different localities in their work and they visited what were called classes, most of them composed of only a few persons.

It was the 30th of January, 1828, that the building committee of the church turned over a certain piece of land and a place of worship. It was located at the junction of Burnside avenue and Larabee street. The second church was built on its present site on Church street during the pastorate of the Rev. B. C. Phelps. A church was built on land donated by the Goodwin Brothers. It was dedicated November 27, 1856. On Sunday January 15, 1893, while the Sunday school was in session, the church was discovered to be on fire. It was burned to the ground. The present church edifice was dedicated March 14, 1894.
