WASHINGTON, (AP) - A joint United States - Canadian test of the Army's antiaircraft guided missile Nike under 'Arctic conditions will be made this winter at Ft. Churchill on the shore of Hudson Bay.
Announcements here and in Ottawa Friday night said the "Operation Frost Jet," intended to determine the effects of extreme cold on the complex parts of the Nike weapons system, will be held here during January and February.
In the first disclosure that Canada has high interest in the United States' Nike antiaircraft defense system, the announcement said:
"Selected Canadian Army personnel, trained at the United States guided missiles center at Ft. Bliss, Texas, during the summer of 1954, will man the Nike weapons. A limited number of United States Army technicians will participate in the operation."
Actual firings of the missiles (which have a reported effective range of about 30 miles) will be made against aircraft flying over an artillery range in the vicinity of Ft. Churchill.
