Full Text
Hon. J. W. Lynch, of Union, Monroe county, member of the State Road Bureau, states that he was informed by Mr. B. F. Eakle, of Sweet Chalybeate Springs, that the C. & O. railroad had agreed to furnish material for the construction of the road from Alleghany Station to the Crow Place, on Dunlap creek, Monroe county, a distance of about 4 miles, and that they would assist in constructing the other 4 miles provided the county of Monroe would put up $200 and C. C. Lewis, owner of the Old Sweet Springs, putting up an additional $200. Geo. W. Stevens, president of the C. & O. railroad, is also president of the Trans-Alleghany Good Roads Association, which held a meeting at White Sulphur Springs on the 2d, and which is exerting a great influence for better roads throughout the southern portion of the state.
Mr. Lynch also reported that Mr. Shidler, government engineer, had completed investigation of the Bluefield to Bristol highway through the county of Monroe. This is a part of the link in the Pittsburg to Bristol highway, which will mean so much to the state, there being 200 miles of macadamized road from Bluefield to Bristol, and macadamized road from Bristol to other points in Tennessee. The connecting link from the northern and southern section of the United States is lacking only in West Virginia. If the people along this line of road avail themselves of Governor Hatfield's proclamation, the roads of West Virginia will be greatly improved.
