Full Text

One of the Beechers.

The Rev. Mr. Beecher, a brother of the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, who lives with his wife in a wild place back in the town of Hardenbergh, where he has settled on a mile square of land, is doing a great deal of good among the rugged class of people who inhabit that country. He travels around from place to place, with his horses and saddle-bags, and preaches regularly on Sundays. He is a plain, unvarnished talker.

Mr. Beecher's wife teaches school. She taught two years and then had to give it up for a while. During that time she received $75 of the state school fund, and expended in books and clothing for the children eighty dollars, thus giving her labor and five dollars besides.

The tract of land owned by Mr. Beecher contains one of the most beautiful lakes in the town of Hardenbergh. It nestles in an amphitheater of hills with no known inlet, and trout abound in its waters in such numbers that Mr. Beecher only fishes from sundown until dark, in that time catching often fifty and sixty fish.

The house in which this couple live was built by the reverend gentleman himself. It is a very good house, considering that a minister unacquainted with carpenters' tools built it. Here he has books, but beside these has little current literature to read and lives as it were away from the world.

Why this man, who is educated and used to the refinements as well as luxuries of life, has taken this course none but himself and wife know. If for health, they have indeed the right place, for work, pure air and fresh water can be had in abundance, and sickness or ailments have been unknown to them.
