Full Text

June 25. The insolence of the Algerines has arisen to so great a pitch, that the Dey or Sovereign of that petty State, makes no scruple of treating the representatives of the crowned heads of Europe, with the most supercilious contempt and indignity. This behaviour was manifested in a late application concerning a treaty between that Barbarian and his Neapolitan Majesty, whose Ambassador, having only demanded a strict compliance with the terms stipulated between the two powers, was treated with the grossest insults, and told in the plainest language that they would fulfil their engagements no farther than corresponded with their own interests. What a shame! that the Europeans should suffer that paltry, insignificant state to levy indiscriminate contributions on their commerce! and this too with a pitiful navy, consisting of 7 or 8 ships, the largest not carrying more than 40 guns!
