The Anniversary of American Independence was celebrated here by a party of Federal Republicans, who partook of a public dinner at Capt. Seth Mitchell's Hall. Elisha P. Cutler Esq. presided, after dinner the following toasts were drank accompanied with the discharge of seventeen guns.
1. The Day—May the spirit of our fathers ever animate our bosoms.
2. Gov. Gerry—May the man who witnessed our struggle for Independence, be the last to sacrifice it to the ambition of the imperial despot.
3. The late Gov. Gore—May the gratitude of the good follow him to his retirement, and the censure of the bad, which constitutes the surest test of merit.
4. Gen. Cobb—May History take charge of his fame, and posterity do him justice.
5. President Madison—May he soar above the sordid views of party and promote the true interests of his country, regardless of the praise or censure of the Mob.
6. Mr. Jefferson—The consummate statesman, the profound Philosopher, the friend of non-importation, non-intercourse, Embargo, Gun-boats, Dry docks and horned Frogs, may his fame be commensurate with the durability of the salt Mountain.
7. The majority of the present Congress—Nothing from nothing and nothing remains.
8. Torpedoes—A Gunpowder Plot to blow up Great-Britain.
9. Constitutional opposition to impolitic Measures—Let others call it Treason, may we never cease to regard it as patriotism.
10. The Federal Constitution—While navigating the tempestuous sea of Liberty, like the Ark, may it ride out the storm in safety "amid the floating wrecks of the world."
11. The Spanish Patriots—May Spain, like a Volcano, pour Cataracts of fire on the head of Napoleon, till she achieves her liberty.
12. Bonaparte—As the imperial Robber has compelled us to defray the expences of his marriage, may we cheerfully contribute our mite for the celebration of his funeral honors.
13. Our Country—May she speak to France the firm and indignant language of an Independent Republic, and enforce it if necessary with the whole weight of her power, the resources, nerve and spirit of the nation.
14. The Clergy—May they never degrade their holy office by becoming the Heralds of ferocious, remorseless, blood-thirsty Jacobinism.
15. The Judiciary of Massachusetts—Like a rock in the Ocean, bidding defiance to the agitations of party.
16. Councillor Lincoln—As blind as a Bat, may he never grope his way to the chair of State.
17. The Democratic House of Representatives of Massachusetts.
"Just as a Fly that goes to bed,
Rests with his tail above his head,
So in this mongrel state of ours
The Rabble are the supreme powers."
We regret being under the necessity of deferring the publication of the proceedings in New Gloucester until our next.
