From the Philadelphia Sentinel of Nov. 17.

During the passage of the steam boat Pennsylvania, from Bordentown to this city, yesterday afternoon, a daring attempt was made to steal the pocket book of one of the passengers. He had been shaved by the colored man who usually officiates as barber on board of the boat. After this operation was performed, the black fellow asked him, if he would not have his coat brushed, to which he assented. The black fellow took the coat on deck; the owner, however, recollecting that his pocket book, which contained five or six hundred dollars, was in it, went up after him, and found the coat hanging on the railing, but the black fellow missing.

On examining the coat, it was ascertained that the pocket book had been taken from it.

Search was made for the thief, and he was at length discovered concealed in the privy.

The pocket book which he held in his hand, was taken from him; on examining which, it was found, that about 150 dollars had been taken from it; 100 dollars of which were immediately got from between his fingers, where he had endeavored to hide it—Every effort to discover the remaining 50 dollars proved abortive. He was put in irons, searched, and had an emetic administered to him, which operated copiously, but all to no purpose. What was done with him, after the arrival of the boat at the wharf, our informant could not tell.
