It is worthy of record that we have reached the 23d of February in the winter of 1870-71, without snow enough at any one time sufficient for heavy teaming. Having given up the hope of it this winter, the lumber men have been bringing in lumber to the Fairbanks yard for the past two weeks on wheels, although some use sleds, and on the roads North and South, sledding is fair except in spots; east there is none. While thousands of dollars have been spent in carting the snow out of New York and Boston, so that the people could do business, the wood-drawers of this section carry shovels with them to throw snow upon the bare spots, so they can get along with their sleds. The oldest inhabitant cannot remember a previous winter without some good sleighing, and generally from two to three months.
