Full Text

We witnessed the brilliant phenomenon mentioned below, and do not recollect to have noticed any thing like it more than once, and that was one evening last winter. We noticed it at the time but do not now recollect the date. On the evening on which the following was witnessed, it was thick and stormy, here, and yet the reflection was like that of fire.

Thousands witnessed last evening an uncommonly brilliant and gorgeous display of the Northern Lights. Between nine and ten o'clock, the whole vault of the sky was covered with streaks and flushes of crimson and green light, radiating from a common centre in the zenith. In some places the red radiance had the appearance of a blood coloured vapor or mist in which, though the atmosphere was perfectly clear, the stars were quenched. In others it looked like soft flames with faintly defined edges. In the cope of heaven, whence the rays streamed every way downwards, the greenish lights were strangely and wildly mixed with irregular flashes of a deep red. The moon was shining brightly all the time, and the earth being covered with snow, which took delicate rose colour by the reflection of the crimson light in the sky, the whole scene was one of wonderful brightness and magnificence.
