Consistency.—Only a few weeks ago, Thomas H. Benton had a resolution smuggled through the Senate, by which the snug sum of about $30,000 was to go into the pockets of Messrs. Blair and Rives, for printing some old British documents, on the subject of the Salt duties. This extravagant proposition was, however, discovered in time to have it reconsidered and reversed, chiefly by Whig votes: About the same time a proposition was made in the House of Representatives, to print the documents showing the defalcations and frauds of the Executive Officers of the Government, which it was supposed would cost about $1000. when a terrible shout was raised by the Locos on the score of economy.
