J. H. Miller Crushed, Is Pinioned Beneath Car for Long Time.
The first accident in the new Edge Moor yard of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company occurred early this morning, when J. H. Miller, a brakeman living at No. 302 Walnut street, was crushed beneath a freight car that jumped the track and fell on him.
He was at work on the south "hump" when a car was cut loose to be pushed over the incline to be classified. The unfortunate man stepped off the engine to get out of the way of the car, but just as it was abreast of him it jumped the rails and tumbled over.
He tried to get away, but was too late, and was pinioned beneath the heavy car and horribly mashed.
The accident was seen by the other members of the crew, who hastened to his assistance, but he was so tightly wedged beneath the car that he could not be removed until jacks were secured and the car raised.
They brought him, unconscious, to this city on a shifting engine, which was met by the Phoenix ambulance, which took him to the Delaware Hospital. His condition improved slightly and although horribly mashed, he may live.
