HURRICANE.
We have rarely if ever witnessed a more tremendous storm, of hail and wind, than happened here on Friday last. It commenced about 12 o'clock in the morning, and continued with unabated fury till evening: All the vessels lying here have suffered severely. Those near the shore were driven with great violence upon the beach, and those at anchor soon followed having parted their cables. Among the latter we are sorry to state, was the United States schr. Porcupine, Commanded by Lt. Chaplin, of the navy. She returned from the falls of St. Mary's (lake Superior) on Thursday afternoon with col. Hawkins and maj. Roberdeau on board—On arriving here it was nearly calm, which afforded her an opportunity to choose the best anchorage; but notwithstanding all her cables, and the active vigilance of her excellent officers and crew, she was forced on shore.
This is the only fit harbor for ships of war at this end of Lake Erie, and from its contiguity to Fort Erie, and being the commencement of ship navigation to the Upper Lakes, it is one of great importance to the United States; and we cannot forbear to express our astonishment, that the government have not long ago rendered it convenient and safe: and especially as the money required for that purpose, would bear no proportion to the certain advantages to be derived from the measure.
The inhabitants of this growing village are desirous to perfect their harbor, but their recent misfortunes have disabled them from doing it, without the aid of government.
