Full Text

Brown, the fugitive Collector.

On the arrival of a vessel at Jamaica, in pursuit of him, a demand was made for his surrender. The Governor said he thought the case one in which he could not interfere with propriety. A warrant was obtained from the Mayor to arrest him, but it did not authorize search for him. Brown obtained bills on London. The bills were advertised to warn persons against buying them, and endeavours are directed to be made in London to stop their payment. But we may have no Minister there when they arrive. Brown threatened a prosecution for defamation for the advertisement! The captain of the vessel in which B. escaped, was arrested. He was a British subject, and the mob clamoured against his being sent to a foreign country for trial, and he was released. An election was then pending.
