Several of the federal papers, to cover the mortification of their recent signal defeat, have made calculations, and given them to the public, which they pretend are accounts, making out a federal majority in the House of Representatives in the next Congress. These calculations are no doubt intended for political effect on the elections yet to come, and, as their authors well know, make up a false issue.

We have not time nor space to refer to those statements, but offer an abstract of a table in detail, made up with care and accuracy in the columns of the [N. Y.] New Era. The members of the 26th Congress, the New Era classes according to their votes on the Independent Treasury Bill; which excludes some friends of the Administration on all other subjects, and supporters of Mr. Van Buren. The results are as follows.

The State of Rhode Island, Maryland and Mississippi are yet to elect their members.

We subjoin a list, showing the candidates in the field, except Messrs. Stuart and Duvall in Maryland, who have not yet consented to run, though we do not doubt that they will yield to the wishes of their friends.

The New Era completes the list, by supposing the three remaining states to vote as before the result would be:

Add 23 states above
111 102 17
120 105 5
Total
114 111 26
125 112 15
17 5
114 128
125 117

In the above account, the loss of Ingersoll's seat, from Pennsylvania, is conceded, and also that of Douglas from Illinois both democrats.

The seats are claimed for the democratic members from New Jersey, and they will undoubtedly obtain. The calculation then makes a majority of 8 on the Independent Treasury bill, which, on all other questions, will be increased.

Besides this we hope to gain several members in Rhode Island and Maryland. Thus stands the case. Let the Providence Journal gainsay it, if it can.
