Full Text

The returns of the votes for Associate Justices of the Supreme Court were canvassed on Tuesday of last week by the State Board of Canvassers, by which it was shown that H. S. Orton had received 87,509 votes for the term ending 1888, and that David Taylor had received 87,384 votes for the term ending 1886. Judge Orton took the oath of office on Wednesday, the 17th inst., and Judge Taylor was sworn in on the 18th inst., upon which latter day the Supreme Court as now constituted was organized. Chief Justice Ryan occupies the center chair behind the bar, with Judges Cole and Orton at his right and Lyon and Taylor at his left, the two senior Judges—Cole and Lyon—sitting next to their Chief. The occasion was an interesting one and was witnessed by a number of prominent citizens. The State of Wisconsin has a Supreme Court in which she may well take a just pride, and one whose opinions are quoted as authority from Maine to California.
