LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19. (U.P.) A trans-Pacific airship line will be inaugurated as soon as congress passes necessary legislation, Paul W. Litchfield, president of Goodyear Tire & Rubber company, announced here today.
Litchfield said he hoped permissive legislation would be adopted at the congressional session opening January 2.
The proposed trans-Pacific dirigible would link California with the Philippine Islands with six-day transportation service, about one-fourth the time required by boat. Honolulu will be a stopping point on the trans-Pacific flight, Litchfield said. It is probable an experimental line will be operated for the first year or two between California and Honolulu.
San Francisco, Los Angeles or San Diego will be the California terminus, depending upon atmospheric conditions and proximity to population centers.
Craft the size and type of the U.S.S. Macon, carrying 100 passengers and 30,000 pounds of freight and mail, will be used in the service, Hugh Allen, Goodyear official said.
While Goodyear also is contemplating a trans-Atlantic line, the Pacific service probably will be instituted first, it was explained.
Legislation which congress must first provide, it was explained, is to determine legal status of dirigibles carrying passengers between nations, to fix liability in case of accidents, and to permit the post office department to send mail on such craft.
Goodyear now is training 25 pilots for trans-sea service in small blimps now stationed about the country, Allen said.
Litchfield is here inspecting Goodyear's local tire plant and the firm's cotton acreage in Arizona.
