COOL WEATHER.
NEW YORK OCT. 15.-- We yesterday were greeted with the agreeable sight of plaid cloaks, surtout coats, and a cheering fire, sure indications of that "nipping and eager air" which precedes a frost; and never was a keen north-wester more anxiously desired; never was ice or snow more fervently prayed for, than at present. The wanderers, driven by pestilence from their homes, are longing for the comforts which they once enjoyed; the merchant, sheltered by a rough house of boards, sighs for his spacious store and convenient counting room; the residents of a country house or cottage, see the fallen leaf and hear the whistling of wind, and long to be home once more, near their cheering fireside. The privations which all suffer can be readily imagined, yet, whatever they may be, there is still gratitude due for life and health preserved.
The eager desire to return to the city must lead to no imprudent act; it will not be safe until frost; and no house should be occupied without previous cleansing and ventilating. A little caution and forbearance will be of great service.
