Let the thousands of men in this country who are out of employment, instead of waiting for a chance to work in some store or factory, or shop, or on some public work, turn their attention to the cultivation of the soil. as the safest investment with the most certain return for their labor. Instead of wasting their time and money in waiting for chances, let them dig out of the ground that sure support and probable competency which always attends the industrious and well-directed efforts of the farmer. There is unoccupied land enough for all of them. Instead of "cooping" themselves up in stores and shops, where they just "squeeze" out enough to support their families, let them turn to the plow and spade; and in the open air take a few breaths of independence.
When "panics"come, the operative, the clerk, the mechanic and others are thrown out of employment, but the farmer with land has enough to do, and enough to eat. He has no pallid wife and starving children crying for bread, for he has enough of it to spare. Perhaps I am rather writing of the situation of our western farmers in this present crisis. but I never knew any 'hard times in old New Hampshire in which the farmers did not stand the brunt of the storm with less injury than any other class in the community.
