Iowa City, Iowa (ANP) - A group of local residents, mostly University of Iowa faculty members, announced plans last week to bring three Negro students here from Prince Edward County, Va., to attend high school.
Public schools in Prince Edward County were closed last year, and will remain closed this year, in protest against a U.S. Supreme Court desegregation order.
Private schools have been opened for white children but some 1,700 Negro boys and girls have been denied an opportunity to attend school, a spokesman for the Iowa City Sponsors for Equal Education said.
Working through the American Friends, Service Committee, the local group has arranged for Otis Willey and James Lee, both 17 and both in the eleventh grade, and James Brown, 16, a tenth grade student. to arrive in time for the opening of the fall semester at the high school here.
