We are glad to find that a strong interest has been aroused in the community in regard to the Rail Road; almost every one speaks favorably of it, and many who have heretofore been opposed to any proposition for the town, in its corporate capacity rendering any aid in the matter, have changed their views, and are now strongly in favor of the action which we have suggested.
This is an important movement, and we would not advise any unnecessary haste in regard to it; We desire to have the whole subject coolly and calmly investigated--let all classes reflect well upon it, and look at it in all its bearings. It would be well, before long to call a public meeting, and have the matter fairly discussed; after the people have thus reflected and talked upon the subject, let a town meeting be called, and the proposition laid before the people, as to whether or not the freemen, who are qualified to vote upon such a question, will loan the credit of the town for one hundred thousand dollars in aid of the project. If they decide in the affirmative, all obstacles will then be removed and the road speedily constructed; but if they decide in the negative, then we are free to confess that the plan must be abandoned, as there is not private enterprise enough in this community to make the project successful,--and capitalists in other places certainly will not render any assistance, unless the people of Newport assume a leading and substantial position in the matter.
