"Confession as Atonement for Sin"
Judaism's [Death Imminent]
(Detroit Jewish News)
The Talmud (Babli, Shabbos, 32a) says that a person who
is ill and is expected to die should confess his sins, (pronounce
vidui) for all who are expected to die should confess.
Another source in the Talmud says that he who confesses
before his death has a part in THE "WORLD TO COME."
(Tractate Sanhedrin 43b)
The reason for this confessional is sometimes con-
nected with the belief that death is a means of atonement.
Thus a person should approach his impending demise as he
approaches the Day of Atonement. Just as it is customary to
confess one's sins before the Day of Atonement so is it cus-
tomary to confess one's sins before death.
