HORRID BARBARITY!
Extract of a letter from a gentleman at
Le Roy, (12 miles from Batavia,) to
his wife in Albany, dated Jan. 6.
“Our army here, does not exceed
400 men, including militia.
The enemy
have returned to Niagara, after having
burnt every house on that road, for
36 miles. Numerous witnesses testify
to the following facts; the Indians mangled
and burnt Mrs. Lovejoy in Buffalo,
massacred two large families at Black-
Rock, namely, Mr. Lusser's and Mr.
Lecott's, murdered Mr. Gardner, put
all the sick to death at Youngstown. Killed,
mangled and scalped 60 at Fort Niagara,
after it was given up. Many
dead bodies are yet lying unburied at Buffalo,
mangled and scalped—Col. Marvin
counted 33 this Morning.
“I met, between Cayuga and this
place, upwards of 100 families in wagons,
sleds and sleighs, many of them
with nothing but what they had on their
backs—nor could they find places to stay
at.
“The Tuscarora Indians are in the
woods, less than a mile from where I am.
without any other shelter than the heavy
canopy.”
