The first shipment of ore from the Texas creek area most recently discovered section of the American mineral belt, will leave for the Selby smelter on the next trip of the Curacao, according to James H. Hewitt, co-owner with Charles Carlson in the Homestake Group, which possesses the distinction of being the first Texas Creek property to produce a shipping tonnage.
Mr. Hewitt states that the initial shipment will comprise about eleven tons, not a large amount to be sure, but sufficient to demonstrate the shipping value of the fine body of ore crosscut late last fall on Homestake Claim No.1.
Assays from every section of the five foot vein have disclosed values which warrant the belief that the ore can be handled at a small profit despite the extreme difficulty of transportation by pack train, but the owners with wise discretion intend to thoroughly prove the values by smelter tests before proceeding with more extensive development work on the vein.
Several tons of the shipment are already in town and the remainder will be brought down by Wm. McGrew within the present week. Pending the receipt of returns from the smelter, Messrs. Hewitt and Carlson intend to proceed with general development work on their property, which possesses some of the best looking surface showings found in the district.
