To the Editor of The Dallas Herald:
I have recently visited Lawrence, Terrell and Elmo, towns on the Texas and Pacific railroad. I find each in a growing condition. Terrell claims a population of fully fifteen hundred. Quite a number of new buildings are in a course of erection, among which is a respectable church edifice. A book store in connection with drugs, has been established, and is doing well. Periodicals and newspapers have been ordered for a news depot. Similar establishments have been inaugurated at Lawrence and Elmo. Books are found to sell well. School books are in demand to meet the wants of students at the opening of fall schools. I always advise book dealers to advertise in the newspaper having the largest circulation in their respective localities. In few kinds of business does advertising pay better than in drugs and books.
Notwithstanding the great complaint in regard to drouth some time since, the recent plentiful rains have imparted life and growth to vegetation, and every variety of crops are yielding better than was anticipated. Wheat and oats are abundant. Corn will be plentiful at low rates. The sweet potatoes crop is promising. Some talk of a second crop of Irish potatoes. Cotton picking will commence soon. El Paso onion seed are being planted. The streets of the towns on the Texas Central will soon be adorned with the Umbrella China tree. I am surprised to find but few of any of the Dallas newspapers in any of the towns on the Texas and Pacific. Why is this? Surely such a circulation would be of mutual benefit to town and county.
A large amount of improved agricultural machinery has recently been introduced into this county. Kaufman county, to which we learn three newspapers are published in, and a fourth one is soon to be added. Three book stores aid in enlightening the people. In many important particulars few counties excel Kaufman.
